Clearance sale Nari Kunjar - Composite Image Made of Gopinis

In this spectacular Pata painting, Lord Krishna is shown riding a Nari Kunjar (elephant made of gopinis). The artist paints the gopinis in the form of an elephant amidst floral environment. This is a quaint genre of art that has had its origins in Medieval India. This particular art form is called Kunjar, a Sanskrit term meaning the elephant. This is largely due to the place of prominence attributed to the Elephant form in its early designs. An unusual form of art, it was primarily designed to highlight the artist’s skills of composition and ‘assemblage’, most importantly within the parameters of a frame work. Animal frames were commonly used though initially restricted, to those of the Elephant and the Horse. The most impressive aspect of this art form was the innovative use of the figure of the woman, nari, presented usually in multiple numbers. Here even the borders are marked prominently with some floral designs.
